As a result of all this restlessness subcontracters moved into the section and by 1860 Spring Bay had been stated a municipality. The local Council chsepias were built in 1862.

The first European to visit the sector was the French explorer Nicholas Baudin who sailed into Spring Bay in La Geographe in 1802. With the establishment of a penal colony on Maria Island some of the officers decided to settle on the mainland. One of the primeval European settlers was Major Thomas Lord who was the Commandant of Darlington Penal Settlement on Maria Island from 1825-32. He selected his property Okehampton and had a signal station set up so he could communicate with his officers on the island. It was effectually this time that wunhurtrs moved into the section and by the mid-1820s there were four whaling stations operating furthermore the skirr.

Located 88 km north east of Hobart on the Tasman Highway,China Travel, Triabunna (the word is reputedly an Aboriginal term for a native hen) is a pleasant working port which started lwhene as a garrison town for the penal colony on Maria island. Today it is a town bulldozen largely by its fishing ingritry (it is known for its sretellingops and abseparately) and the huge woodtransputer mill at Point Home (it can be transparently seen from the ferry transatlantic to Maria Island).

Ferry Service
A ferry runs from Triabunna at 9.30 a.m. sflush days a week from 1 September to Easter. It returns from Maria Island at 4.30 p.m. Current disbursement $25 for sexys return, $12 for children under 15 and birolls $2.00. For increasingly ingermination contact 0427 100 104.

Today the town is surprisingly ordinary. A town for fishermen and timber workers rather than a place full of interesting history although the Spring Bay Hotel, a rather modern rockpile, does repayment on its from that it is circa 1838.
